“Lies at The End of The World” Book Review.

Lies at The End of The World Book Cover.

When I was First Offered The Opportunity to Review This Novel I Originally was Not Going to Review It Because I’am Not a Big Fan of Zombie Novels But When I Read The First Few Chapters to Read Which I Extremely Enjoyed It Changed My Decision and I Could Not Resist The Offer.

This Novel Has Such a Strong Old School “George Romero” Vibe to It That It Seems Like It Could Actually Be Based Off of a Script to a UnFilmed Zombie Movie From The Legendary Director. But This is By No Means a Rip Off of “Romero’s” Movies But a Completely Original Novel with The Same Kind Focus on Characters, and Quality of Plot That Made “Romero’s” Movies So Damn Good and Entertaining.

The Plot is a Mix of Horror, Action, and Drama Which is a Mix of Elements That I Rarely See Done Right in The Horror Genre Like a American Porn Movie That is Also a Strong Action Movie. I Thought Those Elements Were Mixed Together Perfectly Here Where The Drama, or Action Does Not Ruin The Suspense of The Horror. But One of The Things that Stuck in My Mind About The Plot was The Character Development Which I Thought was One of The Most Impressive Here Not One of The Characters Were UnderDeveloped.

Here is The Plot;

“John Frank” a Man Who’s Only Focus for Most His Life Has Been Preparing for The End of The World in a Fortified Country House Away From The City. But When a Zombie Apocalypse Sweeps Across North America It Puts His Planning to The Test in Reality. Hiding safely in His Attic in His Fortified Country Home Thinking He is The Only Survivor But is Euphorically Surprised When Another Survivor Crosses His Path a Young Beautiful Women Named “Rachael Evans”. Together These Two Survivors Navigate Life in This Post Apocalyptic World Where Survival is Pitted Against Hope.

The Characters in This Novel are Very Fleshed Out and Bound to Reality and Not Out of This World Cartoons Like a Lot of Characters in The Zombie Genre. Most of The Characters Here a Person Has seen in their Daily Lives Like The Resourceful Beautiful Chick Who Wastes Her Abilities But is Capable of Far More, or The Weirdo with No Friends and Most Likely Has Never Had Many Friends. One Thing About The Characters is Despite Them Being in a Completely Unreal Situation Their Everday Experiances While They Try to Survive in Their New Reality are Always Down to Earth and Familiar to Most People.

The Lead Character “John Frank” is Your Usual Everyman Except for His Unusual InExperiance of Everyday Experiances. Which I Think is a Good Thing Here Because It Gives The Reader More of a Opportunity to Sympathize with This Character Because He is First Experiancing This Post Apocalyptic Zombie Filled World of The Novel Like The Readers.

“Rachel Evans” “John Frank’s” Lover and Companion is a Beautiful Blue Eyed Blonde Who is Very Resourceful But Impulsive and Could Kick Ass Whenever It is Necessary. In Her Life Before The Zombie Apocalypse She was a Normal College Student Who Liked to Party The Usual Beautiful College Woman a Person See’s at Any Mall.

One of The Coolest Characters in This Whole Novel in My Opinion is “Mercutio” The Zombie Eating Bear I Think Everybody Who Reads The Novel Will Like Him. When He First Shows Up He Just Eats The Remains of Zombie’s Who Have Already Have Been Returned to The Grave But Later He Whenever He See’s A Zombie He Stands On His Hind Leg’s Ready to Tear Them to Pieces  I Have Never Heard or Seen Any Creature Like This in Any Other Zombie Book or Movie But I Wish There Was.

I’am Not Going to say Much About This Next Character But I Will This Watch Out for “Peter Van Aalten” He is Not Just Important to What Happens Later in The Story But He Also Does Something That is So Damn Funny But Stupid I Think It is One of The Most Memorable Moments of The Novel and If You are a “Romero” Fan It Will Remind You a Lot of a Character in “Romero’s Day of The Dead” Does.

There are More Interesting Characters I Could Talk About But I’am Not Going to Ruin The Surprises in The Novel For Everbody. But I Do Have One More Thing to Say About The Characters There is Always Something About Each One That You Will Find to Be Interesting Even If Their Role is Small in the Plot.

Now Finally On to One of  The Most Important Aspect of a Zombie Movie, or Novel The Action Which is Pretty Damn Intense in Here. The Action in Here Starts Out Slow But Begins to Build in Momentum and Does Not Ever Lose Any of It’s Momentum Which Really Adds to The Horror.

The Blood & Guts in Here are Just as Good as You Would Expect From a Novel of This Quality The Descriptions of Zombies Eating Flesh are Incredible and The Descriptions of The Zombies Themselves are so Good You Think are Smell The Rotting Flesh.

The Zombies in Here Follow The Classic “Romero” Rules of The Triliogy These Zombies are Old School Walkers That They By The Destruction of Their Brain and The Infection Spreads By Being Bitten or Nicked in Anyway By a Zombie.

I Give This Novel a Rating a Rarely Give to Any Book, or Movie 10/10 This Novel is a Damn Good Read Really Worth The Purchase Any Real Horror Fan Should Definitely Get This Book.
